Pteridospermatophyta, also called seed ferns, were an extinct group of plants historically classified as seed-bearing but with fronds closely resembling those of ferns. They were among the earliest seed-producing plants and were prominent from the late Devonian period through the Mesozoic.

The significance of this group lies in demonstrating a transition in plant reproduction: seeds replaced spores as the dominant reproductive form. Seeds enabled plants to colonize drier environments, since reproduction no longer depended on surface water as it did in ferns.

Morphological characteristics

The fronds were typically compound with small leaflets, making it difficult to distinguish them from true ferns based on foliage alone. Definitive classification depended on finding seeds attached to the fronds or reproductive organs. The stems of some species were trees, while others were shrubs or lianas with climbing growth.

Geographic and temporal distribution

The group was most abundant during the Carboniferous and Permian periods and formed a major component of coal-bearing strata. Some related groups—such as the Glossopteridales of southern Gondwana and the Caytoniales of the Mesozoic—persisted longer. The group eventually went extinct, replaced by flowering plants and conifers.

Taxonomic status

In modern cladistic classification, Pteridospermatophyta is not recognized as a single common ancestor group (monophyletic). Instead it serves as a grade—an informal grouping of several distinct lineages of early seed-bearing plants. For this reason the name is typically used as a historical and descriptive term rather than as a formal category in phylogenetic systematics.
