Qabow (also written qaboow) is a thermal state characterized by lower temperature when compared to another thermal state or to normal human body temperature. The term itself is not a precise scientific measurement, but rather a descriptive category: something that is qabow has less thermal energy than something else it is being compared to.
In modern physics, heat is the motion of atoms and molecules. When this motion decreases, temperature falls. Thus "qabow" is not a form of energy moving on its own, but rather the absence or reduction of thermal energy. Heat always flows from a hot place to a cold place, until both reach the same level.
Measurement and scales
Temperature is measured with a thermometer, using the Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin scale. The Kelvin scale begins at a point known as absolute zero, the lowest possible limit where no further thermal motion can be removed. This point itself cannot be reached, but objects can approach it.
Effects on living things
Humans maintain a stable body temperature. When the environment is very cold, the body uses shivering and blood vessel constriction in the skin to preserve heat. If the temperature continues to drop, hypothermia and frostbite of the extremities and ears can occur. Some animals respond through hibernation or torpor.
Technical applications
Cold is used in food preservation, medicine storage and treatment, and cooling of machines and computers. The field known as cryogenics works at extremely low temperatures, where certain materials display new properties, such as superconductivity.
