Roentgenium (symbol: Rg) is a synthetic chemical element with atomic number 111. The element does not occur in nature; it is produced in a device called an accelerator, a machine that speeds up atomic nuclei and collides them together. It belongs to the class of superheavy elements (transactinides), all of which are radioactive.

The element is named after Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the scientist who discovered X-rays. Knowledge of it comes from small experiments in which very few atoms were created, and therefore most of the chemical properties of Rg are theoretical predictions rather than firmly established measurements.

Discovery

The element was first produced at the GSI research centre in Darmstadt, Germany, in the 1990s. The method used involved bombarding bismuth with nickel, then analyzing the energy spectra and decay patterns produced. Official recognition of the name was given by the international chemistry and physics bodies in the years that followed.
