Rooster

A rooster is the name given to an adult male chicken, one of the domesticated bird species (Gallus gallus domesticus). It is recognized by its loud crowing in the morning and by physical characteristics such as a large comb (head crest), long tail feathers, and prominent wattles.

Roosters live wherever chickens are kept, which is throughout the world. Their primary role on farms and in homesteads is reproduction: they fertilize chicken eggs and play a part in protecting the flock.

Physical Characteristics

Compared to hens (females), roosters are larger, with larger combs and wattles, and their plumage is more lustrous. The tail and back feathers are long and arched. Most roosters have spurs or pointed growths on their legs, which are used in fighting.

Behavior and Vocalizations

Roosters crow regularly; their crowing is linked to circadian rhythms and to other stimuli such as sound or the presence of another rooster. It is not only in the morning; they crow throughout the day. Crowing serves as a signal of territorial claim and flock hierarchy. The chicken flock has a hierarchy that determines access to food and sleeping areas.

Reproduction

One rooster is sufficient for a flock of chickens. Hen eggs require fertilization by a rooster if chicks are to hatch; otherwise eggs remain unfertilized and are used for consumption. After mating begins, the hen requires consistent warmth for approximately three weeks until chicks hatch.

Roosters in Culture

Roosters have become symbols of dawn and morning in many places and appear in stories, poetry, and names of certain peoples. Cockfighting is illegal in many countries due to animal welfare concerns, but it persists illegally in some northern and southern regions.
