The scorpion (also called Dabaqallooc or Dabaqaroof) is an arthropod belonging to the class Arachnida, which also includes spiders and ticks. It is recognized by a pair of pincers (pedipalps) resembling claws, and a long, curved tail ending in a venomous sting.
Scorpions are found in many parts of the world, particularly in deserts and dry, warm regions, but also in rainforests and mountains. Somalia and the Horn of Africa generally provide suitable habitats for many species, as the climate is warm and rocky terrain is abundant.
Body Structure
The body is divided into two main parts: the front section (cephalothorax) and the abdomen, which contains the tail. It has three pairs of walking legs—fewer than most arthropods, which have four pairs. Vision includes two eyes in the center and smaller eyes on the sides, but eyesight is weak; the scorpion relies mainly on sensing vibrations in the ground and fine hairs that are sensitive to touch.
Venom and Danger
All scorpion species possess venom, though only a small number are dangerous to humans. The venom primarily affects the nervous system. When stung, typical symptoms include severe pain, fever, and burning at the site of the sting. Children and elderly people face greater risk. The most venomous species are largely found in certain families, including Buthidae.
Behavior and Reproduction
Scorpions are mostly active at night; during the day they hide under rocks, in burrows, or in crevices. They hunt insects and other small animals, grasping them with their pincers and injecting venom if the prey resists. Most species reproduce by live birth; the mother carries the young on her back until they shed their first skin.
Other Characteristics
A notable feature of scorpions is that their bodies emit a blue-green glow when exposed to ultraviolet light; the scientific reason for this is not fully understood. They are also able to endure extreme heat and prolonged starvation, which allows them to survive in harsh environments.
