Seaborgium (chemical symbol: Sg) is a synthetic element with atomic number 106. It does not occur naturally; it is created using a device called a particle accelerator, which bombards one nucleus with another nucleus so that they fuse together. It is extremely difficult to produce because only a small number of atoms are created at a time.
All known isotopes of seaborgium are radioactive and decay rapidly, making it unsuitable for industrial or medical applications. Research in this field focuses on the structure of heavy nuclei and how these elements behave when compared to theoretical predictions.
Name
The element is named after Glenn T. Seaborg, an American chemist who contributed to the discovery of many heavy elements. The naming was controversial because the person after whom it was named was still alive at the time of approval; the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) eventually accepted the name.
Discovery
Teams from the United States and the Soviet Union both claimed to have produced the element in the late twentieth century. The dispute over credit for discovery was reviewed by a joint committee, and the name Seaborgium became official in the 1990s.
Properties
Seaborgium belongs to group 6 of the periodic table, in the same group as chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. Chemical behavior similar to that of these elements was tested through atom-by-atom experiments, which showed it forms compounds resembling those of tungsten. Physical properties such as density and melting point have not been measured; they rest on theoretical calculation.
