Semantic satiation is a cognitive effect that occurs when a word or short phrase is repeated continuously—whether spoken aloud or read—until the person experiences the word as having lost its meaning. The sound persists, but the rapid connection between the sound and its meaning weakens temporarily.

This effect is temporary. After brief rest or when the word is used in a different sentence, the meaning returns. It is commonly studied in psycholinguistic experiments by having subjects repeat a word for 30 seconds to several minutes, then measuring how quickly they can associate the word with its meaning again.

Explanation

The most common explanation rests on the idea of neural adaptation. When the same neural pathway for a word is repeatedly activated, its response diminishes. As a result, the retrieval of meaning declines, while recognition of the sound continues. This is explained by the brain distinguishing between the processing of sound and the processing of meaning.

Some researchers argue that the effect does not stem entirely from fatigue but is partly due to changes in attention and how a person interprets the task. With repeated exposure, a person encounters an unusual sensation about the quality of the sound itself, which intensifies the sense of meaninglessness.
