Silver (Arabic: فضة) is a precious metal with the chemical symbol Ag and atomic number 47. It is one of the transition metals, occupying a position in the periodic table alongside gold and copper. Its color is a bright, lustrous white when cleaned and polished.

Silver possesses distinctive properties: it has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals, and it also reflects light exceptionally well. These characteristics have led to its use in electronics, mirrors, and heat management equipment. It is a ductile and malleable metal that can be drawn into wire.

NoteNote: Somali words for silver vary in usage. Some speakers use "maar" for copper or reddish metals, while "lacag" and "qalin" are also used for silver. This entry refers to the chemical element Ag.

Physical and chemical properties

Silver is a dense metal with a density of approximately 10.5 grams per cubic centimeter. Its melting point is around 960 degrees Celsius. Chemically, it is relatively stable compared to other common metals: it does not react with air or water alone. However, when exposed to sulfur-containing gases, its surface develops a dark coating of silver sulfide—what is known as tarnish.

Occurrence and production

Silver is found in ore deposits, sometimes occurring in native form as pure silver, but more commonly in sulfide ores or mixed with copper, zinc, and lead ores. Consequently, a significant portion of silver production comes as a by-product from the refining of other metals. Major producing countries include Mexico, Peru, and China.

Applications

Silver has four main uses: electronics and electrical conduction; jewelry and decorative items (silver is often alloyed with copper because pure silver is too soft); currency and monetary reserves, where silver bars and coins are stored; and emerging technologies such as solar conduction panels. Silver compounds also have antimicrobial properties and are used in wound treatment and cleaning products.

Historically, silver played a major role in photography because its halide compounds are light-sensitive; this use declined sharply with the rise of digital imaging. It was also among the earliest metals used by humans as currency, giving it a long-standing connection to economic systems.
