A solute is a substance that dissolves in another substance to form a solution. A solution consists of two essential components: the solute, which is typically present in smaller amount, and the solvent, which is the larger portion of the liquid. A common example is salt and water: salt is the solute, and water is the solvent.

When a solute dissolves, its small particles—atoms, molecules, or ions—separate and spread uniformly throughout the solvent. This causes the solution to become uniform and single-phase (homogeneous), making it difficult for the human eye to distinguish the individual components.

Types of solutes

Solutes can be solid, liquid, or gas. Salt and sugar are solid solutes. Alcohol can be a liquid solute when water is added to it. Carbon dioxide gas in carbonated beverages is a gaseous solute. The solvent can also be non-aqueous, such as acetone or benzene, which affects the types of solutes it can dissolve.

Solubility and intermolecular forces

Solubility depends on the attractive forces between the particles of the solute and the particles of the solvent. When both substances have similar properties—for example, both are polar—solubility is generally high. Therefore, salt, which is ionic, dissolves well in polar water, whereas non-polar oil does not dissolve in water.

Concentration and saturation

The amount of solute in a solution is measured numerically using measures such as molarity (moles of solute per liter of solution), percentage by weight, or molality. When the solvent has taken up the maximum amount of solute at a particular temperature, the solution is said to be saturated. Temperature and, in the case of gases, pressure affect how much solute can dissolve.

Significance

The concept of solutes is fundamental to liquid chemistry, cell biology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Chemical reactions often occur in solutions because the dissolved particles can move freely and interact with one another. Blood, fruit juice, and seawater are all solutions containing various solutes.
