Sulfur (English: Sulfur, Arabic: كبريت) is a chemical element with the symbol S. It is a non-metal whose normal state at room temperature is a hard, brittle solid that breaks easily when struck. Most sulfur molecules consist of three bonded atoms, written as S8.

Sulfur is found in the earth in pure form, particularly in areas with volcanic activity and hot springs, and also mixed in various ores such as pyrite and gypsum. It also occurs in fossil fuels—oil and natural gas—where it is extracted during oil refining.

Chemical properties

Sulfur has atomic number 16 and is in the sixteenth group of the periodic table, the same group as oxygen. It can combine with many elements and forms important compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which has a foul odor resembling rotten eggs, and sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is released when sulfur burns. Sulfur has various oxidation states, allowing it to form different compounds.

Industrial uses

The largest industrial use of sulfur is the production of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). This acid is used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers for crops, battery production, and mineral extraction processes. Sulfur is also used in the vulcanization of rubber, which strengthens it, and in the production of medicines for plant diseases and pesticides.

Role in life

Sulfur is one of the chemical elements essential to life. It is part of the structure of the amino acids cysteine and methionine, which are components of proteins. Sulfur-sulfur bonds (disulfide bonds) help proteins maintain their rigid structure. Some bacteria use sulfur as an energy source, particularly in oxygen-free environments.

Environmental concerns

When sulfur-containing oil is burned, sulfur dioxide enters the air, where it can produce acid rain, which damages water systems and plants. For this reason, many countries have enacted regulations limiting the amount of sulfur in vehicle and ship fuel, prompting oil refineries to remove more sulfur from their products.
