Swimming is the movement of a person through water using their arms, legs, and body motion to achieve direction and buoyancy. The human body is naturally dense, so part of it sinks when breath is held; swimming consists of generating force to propel the body forward and managing breathing.
Swimming has two main purposes: safety (preventing drowning and managing maritime work, fishing, and boating) and sport or exercise. It is one of the largest sports in the Olympic Games and has rules, competitions, and time standards.
Swimming techniques
Formal racing includes four well-known strokes. Freestyle (front crawl) is the fastest, with alternating arms rotating forward. Backstroke is performed face-up. Breaststroke uses symmetric arm and leg motions in a single cycle. Butterfly involves both arms thrusting forward simultaneously, with the legs moving in a synchronized undulating motion.
Breathing and body position
Swimmers breathe in through the mouth and exhale through the nose or mouth into the water to maintain rhythm. When the head and back are aligned and horizontal, water resistance decreases, which is why training emphasizes body position as much as physical effort.
Water safety
Drowning is a major cause of death worldwide, particularly among children. Safety measures include teaching young people to swim, using buoyant jackets during boating, avoiding dangerous currents and rip tides, and not swimming alone. Large beaches and pools typically have trained lifeguards and emergency response services.
Competition and related sports
Swimming competitions take place in pools of standard dimensions, organized by stroke type and distance. There are also open water swimming, water polo, diving, and artistic swimming. The international body governing competition rules is World Aquatics (formerly known as FINA).
