A telephone is a device that converts sound into electrical signals and transmits them over a distance, then converts them back into audible sound at the receiving end. This allows two people in different locations to communicate in real time.

The system has three basic components: the handset (microphone and speaker), the transmission line or connection, and the switching centre that links the two parties. Each person has a unique number called a telephone number, which the system uses to identify the intended recipient.

History of development

The first working telephone was developed in the late nineteenth century. Alexander Graham Bell is most commonly associated with its invention, though many others conducted parallel work that led to legal disputes. Initially, connections were made manually by operators working at switchboards. Later, automatic switching was introduced, allowing users to dial a number themselves.

Numbering system

A telephone number typically consists of a country code, an area or network code, and the subscriber's number. International bodies establish numbering formats to ensure each number is unique worldwide. When making international calls, a special prefix indicates that the call is going outside the country.

Transition from analogue to digital

Early systems transmitted sound in analogue form, with electrical waves directly mimicking sound waves. Later, digital transmission was adopted, converting sound into numerical data (bits). This method reduced noise and interference and made it possible for a single line to carry multiple calls simultaneously.

Mobile phones and the internet

From the late twentieth century onwards, mobile phones using radio waves spread widely, especially in areas where laying fixed lines was difficult. Today, most calls travel over internet networks using VoIP technology, and phones have become multi-purpose devices handling voice, text, images, and digital services.
