Time travel is the concept that a person or object could move from one moment in time to another, whether to a future time or to the past. The idea is well known in science fiction literature, but it also appears in discussions of theoretical physics concerning the nature of time.

In modern physics, time is not an absolute and uniform dimension for everyone. Einstein's theory of relativity showed that the rate of clocks depends on motion and gravitational force. This has led to forward time travel being considered theoretically possible, whereas backward time travel to the past remains highly disputed.

Time and Relativity

Special relativity theory states that a clock moving rapidly passes time more slowly than one at rest. This is known as time dilation. General relativity theory further shows that clocks near massive objects also slow down. Both effects have been measured, for example in atomic clocks aboard satellites and aircraft; the GPS system must account for these effects to provide accurate positions.

Forward Time Travel

According to conventional physics, one-way travel is possible: a person moving at speeds close to that of light, or living in a region of strong gravitational force, would experience less time passing than people elsewhere. Upon return, they could witness the future of others. This does not violate the laws of physics, but would require energy and technology not currently available.

Backward Time Travel and Obstacles

Certain solutions to general relativity equations propose structures such as wormholes or closed time-like curves that could theoretically permit backward time travel. However, these solutions typically require exotic matter or negative energy, whose existence in nature is unknown. For this reason, many physicists regard them as mathematical results without confirmation that they exist in reality.

Logical Consistency

The most famous paradox is the grandfather paradox: if someone travels to the past and prevents their own birth, how could they have traveled back in time in the first place? Proposed solutions include the principle of self-consistency, which states that whatever occurs must be consistent with the existing timeline, and the many-worlds interpretation in which changes occur in an alternate branch. Neither has been experimentally verified.

UncertaintyThe sections concerning wormholes and closed time-like curves are subjects still under debate in science; there is no experimental evidence showing that backward time travel is possible.

Science Fiction and Culture

Time travel has become one of the most common themes in science fiction. H. G. Wells's novel The Time Machine (1895) popularized the idea of a device that transports a person to different times. Since then, numerous films, novels, and stories have used time travel to explore questions of choice, destiny, and responsibility.
