A unit of measurement is an established standard used to quantify measurable quantities such as length, mass, time, temperature, or pressure. When something is said to be five meters long, this means its length is five times the meter unit. Units of measurement form the basis for comparison, commerce, and scientific research, as they provide a common language of quantification across different peoples.

The Somali word 'halbeeg' also has a broader meaning: a criterion or standard by which something is evaluated, for example 'halbeegyada tayada' (quality standards). This section focuses on the unit of measurement in the technical sense (English: unit).

Systems of Units

The International System of Units (SI) is the most widely used system today. It is built on several base units, such as the meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (electric current), kelvin (temperature), mole (quantity of substance), and candela (luminous intensity). Other systems, such as the imperial system (feet, pounds, gallons), continue to be used in some countries.

Numerical Prefixes

To avoid extremely large or small numbers, SI units are modified with prefixes (horgalayaal) that represent powers of ten. For example, 'kilo-' means one thousand times, 'milli-' means one-thousandth, and 'mega-' means one million times. Therefore, a kilometer is one thousand meters.

Kilopascal (kPa)

One well-known unit is the pascal (Pa), which measures pressure—the force exerted over a unit area. A kilopascal (kPa) equals one thousand pascals. It is commonly used to express atmospheric pressure in tires, air pressure, and structural engineering calculations, because the pascal alone is too small for everyday practical use.

Maintaining Units

Units function only when their values are fixed according to a shared definition. International bodies maintain the definitions of base units, and in recent decades most have been linked to fundamental physical constants rather than to tangible objects. Governments maintain offices of weights and measures that ensure commercial scales and equipment conform to recognized standards.
