Vanadium (chemical symbol: V) is a transition metal with atomic number 23. It belongs to the group of metals known as transition metals, meaning it has multiple distinct oxidation states. Pure vanadium is a silvery-white, hard metal that resists corrosion and is not easily broken.
It does not occur in nature in pure form. It is found in many ores and in certain types of oil, including heavy crude and residues from petroleum refining. Most vanadium is obtained as a byproduct of iron ore processing, where it occurs in association with other elements.
Chemical Properties
Vanadium exhibits well-known oxidation states of +2, +3, +4, and +5. The different solutions at these oxidation states display different colors—blue, green, and red—making it a notable element in chemistry instruction for demonstrating oxidation states. When exposed to air, a protective oxide layer forms on its surface.
Uses
The most widespread use is in alloys. When small amounts of vanadium are added to iron, they increase strength and hardness; such steel is used in tools, construction materials, and pipes. Titanium-vanadium-aluminum alloys are used in aircraft manufacturing because of their low weight and high strength.
Vanadium compounds, particularly vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), are used as catalysts in industrial processes for manufacturing sulfuric acid. Research is also ongoing into lithium-vanadium batteries designed for large-scale energy storage.
Biology and Health
Vanadium compounds have been found in small quantities in certain organisms, and their role in glucose metabolism has been studied. Many of these compounds are toxic, especially when inhaled as dust from industrial workshops, which can cause respiratory irritation. For this reason, workplaces where vanadium is processed are subject to air filtration and safety requirements.
