A vehicle is a tool designed to transport people or cargo from one place to another. The term encompasses automobiles, trains, ships, aircraft, bicycles, and even vehicles operated outside land, such as hand-held rockets and air vessels. Many vehicles are powered by motors and fuel or electricity, while others operate using human or animal power.
Vehicles are classified by their operating environment: land vehicles (automobiles, buses, trains, bicycles), water vehicles (boats, ships, ferries), air vehicles (aircraft, helicopters), and spacecraft. They are also classified by use: private vehicles, public transportation, cargo vehicles, and emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks.
Main Components
Most vehicles have a power source (motor or battery), a transmission system that transfers power to the wheels or propellers, a steering system, and a braking system. They also have a body or frame that protects passengers and cargo. Modern vehicles include safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and electronic systems that prevent wheel lockup during braking.
Brief History
Before the motor age, land vehicles were powered by animals—horses, camels, donkeys—or were manually drawn. The steam engine of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries powered trains and steamships. In the late nineteenth century, the internal combustion engine automobile was invented, which became a global mode of transport in the twentieth century. In the twenty-first century, electric vehicles and automatic transmission systems are expanding.
Social and Environmental Impact
Vehicles affect how cities are built, the transportation of goods, and access to health and education services. On the other hand, fuel-powered vehicles emit smoke and greenhouse gases, causing air pollution and road congestion. Most governments have enacted laws regulating emission levels, vehicle testing, traffic safety, and road infrastructure.
