Waste is anything discarded by a person or organization after it is no longer seen to be useful or usable. The status of waste is not fixed to the object itself: the same item can be waste in one place but reused elsewhere as a resource (for example, scrap metal can be melted down and reprocessed).

Each type requires separate collection, storage, and disposal methods.

Management methods

The standard waste management process consists of collection, transport, sorting, and then disposal or reuse. The most widely used approaches are landfills, incineration (which sometimes generates energy), recycling, and composting of food scraps and garden waste. Another method is anaerobic digestion, which produces methane gas.

Hierarchy of options

Waste policy commonly follows a top-down hierarchy: first, reduce the amount of waste produced; second, reuse the same item; third, recycle; fourth, recover energy; finally, landfill. The circular economy concept argues that products should be designed from the outset for reuse, so that waste is never generated.

Health and environmental impacts

Improperly managed waste can contaminate groundwater when leachate from landfills seeps down. Uncontrolled incineration releases smoke and toxic substances. Landfills produce methane, a greenhouse gas. Plastic waste can enter rivers and seas and break down into microplastics. Workers who manually collect waste face risks of injury and infection without proper protective equipment.
