Watch

A watch (also called a wristwatch or hand-held timepiece) is a small portable device used to tell time. It is typically worn on the wrist by a strap or chain, or carried in a pocket. Its primary function is to display hours, minutes, and seconds.

A watch operates through a mechanism that divides time into equal intervals. This mechanism may be mechanical, using gears, or electronic, using a quartz crystal. The result is displayed either on an analog face with moving hands or as digital numerals.

Main Components

A mechanical watch consists of a power source (spring or battery), a transmission system (gears), and an escapement mechanism that releases power in regulated amounts. It also contains a dial, case, and a crown on the outside for setting the time. Quartz watches use a vibrating silicon crystal to convert its frequency into seconds.

Types

Watches are commonly classified by their power source: hand-wound watches, automatic watches that harvest energy from wrist movement, battery-powered watches, and solar-powered watches. There are also modern smartwatches, which contain software, connect to phones, and measure steps, heart rate, and other data.

Brief History

Portable watches developed from large stationary clocks and tower clocks once springs replaced falling weights. Early examples were pocket watches. Wristwatches became widespread in later centuries, particularly after their adoption by the military. The development of quartz technology in the late twentieth century made accurate, affordable watches possible, transforming the global watch industry.

Use and Culture

Beyond timekeeping, watches became objects of fashion and status. Specialized versions were created for specific purposes, such as waterproof sports watches and chronographs with complex displays. Watch manufacturers in Switzerland, Japan, and China dominate the global market.
