Wind is the movement of air from one place to another. It occurs when atmospheric pressure (the weight of air above) differs between two adjacent locations. Air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
Wind is defined by two characteristics: speed and direction. Direction is typically named after the place from which the wind originates—for example, a 'northerly wind' comes from the north. Speed is measured in meters per second, kilometers per hour, or knots (nautical miles per hour).
Cause
The sun's heat does not warm the Earth's surface uniformly. In heated areas, air becomes warm and rises, leaving low pressure behind. Cold, dense air moves in to replace it. This continuous circulation creates local and global winds. The Earth's rotation has an effect (the Coriolis effect) that deflects wind direction—to the right in the northern hemisphere, to the left in the southern hemisphere.
Types
Local winds change between day and night, such as sea and land breezes that arise from temperature differences between sea and land. Seasonal winds also exist, such as the monsoon, whose direction changes each year in connection with rainfall patterns. Storms and cyclones have very high speeds.
Winds of Somalia
Somalia's coasts and the Indian Ocean are affected by the monsoon system. In summer, strong winds blow from the southwest, triggering upwelling of seawater that increases marine productivity. In winter, the direction changes. Farmers and fishermen use these seasonal patterns in their planning.
Uses and effects
Wind is used to generate electrical power through turbines. It is the primary way trees and vegetation are dispersed, and it creates ocean waves. It also contributes to soil erosion and the spread of dust in areas with sparse vegetation cover.
